Five years after the state government’s direction, the Jammu and Kashmir Wakf Board has begun installing CCTV cameras in shrines across the valley.
Only recently, a single CCTV camera was installed inside the Hazrat Syed Hassan Mantaqi Sahib (RA) shrine at Awantipora, Pulwama.
Talking to The Kashmir Monitor, Wakf Board Vice-Chairman, Peer Muhammad Hussain, said that they would soon install CCTV cameras in all the shrines.
“We have started the process. Two months ago, we installed a CCTV camera in Hazrat Mantaki Sahib (RA) shrine. Our next target is the shrine of Dastgeer Sahib (RA),” he said.
“I will be monitoring these cameras from my office, and that is why the installation is taking more time. Otherwise the process can be completed in a month.”
In the recent past, mysterious fires damaged many revered shrines in the valley.
In 2012, the 200-year-old shrine of Dastageer Sahib (RA) at Khanyar here was gutted in a major fire.
